I thought you might like to see a few great little items that I simply cannot live without:

Before & After - My Makeup Lesson at The Make-up Studio

Hold on to your seats ladies, it's about to get shockingly real up in here.  Today I'm writing about my experience during my Personalized Makeup Lesson with Julie Farley at The Make-up Studio.  So many of my friends have mentioned wanting to take a Lesson from Julie and since I've wanted to for so long we thought it would be a great idea to do it and give you those of you considering it the inside scoop.  

Mainly so that no one has the opportunity to blackmail me with them, I'll be sharing a series of  photos that my trusty co-Editor, Kim, took for me.  I'll also be sharing a few tips and tricks I learned along the way.  This may be a lengthy post but I promise it's well worth the read!

For a little background I think you should know about my relationship with makeup.  The religious group I grew up in didn't approve of makeup so I never wore it.  I always wanted to try it but felt guilty, overdone and uncomfortable in it.  It wasn't until I was 27 when I started wearing a light concealer and mascara on a consistent basis.  That said, things that your average 13 yr. old girl knows about makeup are still new to me.  I've learned a lot over the last few years but now wish I hadn't wasted so much time and gone straight to Julie first.  

So here I am... hair still wet and not a spec of makeup on that face.  Scary, I know.

Julie requests that you bring in all of your makeup to the lesson... so, yep.  That's it.  All of it.  The photo above is the full extent of the makeup I own.  And, yes, for those inquiring minds, that is a lipsmackers strawberry sparkle lip gloss.  And, no, I'm not 16 anymore but since I didn't get to wear it as a highschooler, by george, I'll have my fun now.

Where to start?  Apply primer.  The most luxuriously smooth my skin has ever felt.  Pure silk.  You can find it here: Senna Silky Primer.

Learning Color Theory is essential to finding the right colors for your face and Julie explains it so effortlessly.  This is where the first huge light bulb went on for me.  

Testing Foundations:  "You want to see the EFFECTS of the makeup not the makeup."  Light bulb!

Brushes, brushes, brushes!  "The bigger the brush the bigger the job."  This is an area I've always been too scared to invest in but now realize it's one of the biggest things holding me back from getting that flawless look.  The Make-up Studio's line of brushes felt divine on my skin and are not terribly expensive... hmmm, Christmas gift to myself?  In fact they're running a SUPER good deal on a set of Stila brushes right now:  Stila Holiday Brush Set - Five Brushes for $28!  Julie also mentioned an inexpensive Kirkland brand set you can find at Costco that she recommends as a starter set.  Upkeep - Clean your brushes once a month.

After a perfectly matched tinted moisturizer foundation.  Tip for choosing a foundation & concealer: Remember your chest, neck, face and forehead are all different colors so test on all areas to be sure it's a good match.

After concealer.  Tip: Don't choose an under-eye concealer that is too light - a very common mistake.

Trying my hand at Lash Enhancement.  Instead of a crumbly or runny liquid eyeliner I LOVE Julie's Lash Enhancement system.  The trick?  A richly pigmented shadow mixed with a dot of sealer and applied with a stiff straight brush at the base of the lashes.  Gorgeous and natural.

Mascara - "Buy cheap, buy often.  Mascara should be replaced every six weeks."  My most favorite eye accessory: The Makeup Studio's Blinc Heater Eyelash Curler.  AMAZING.

It may be a little hard to see here but Julie had just applied a light, flesh-toned eyeshadow under my cheek bones for a contouring trick.  This was before it was blended but, even after, the effect was extremely dramatic!

One of my favorite tips from Julie was to do your eyes first.  Aside from what we did here Julie consistently does eyes first so that any mess from eye makeup doesn't ruin your already done under-eyes and cheeks.  This way you're not left re-doing concealer or powder or wiping it all off from stray mascara. Since we did my face first, Julie's solution to keeping my face clean was to brush on a heavy amount of pigment-less powder under my eyes and simply brush it away after my eyes were all done.  

At the end of your lesson you're given a sheet documenting every single product and brush used and a visual detailed chart of the eye makeup layers and process.  Julie even sent me away with some samples to try!  With my sheet of products and the order in which they were applied, I can now re-create the look on my own!

Another of my most favorite quotes from Julie "Blush should look like it's coming from underneath the skin".  Finally with blush and lips done and a picture with the makeup master herself!  :)  

All done!  Everything we applied was so light that I the only thing I could actually feel on my face was my mascara.  It felt so great to look good and not feel like I was wearing a thick mask over my face.

In summary, this was altogether a life-changing two and half hours.  Here I've only really mentioned the things that I think would be helpful for everyone but I cannot stress how much I gained on a personal level.  Just finding a beautifully matched foundation would've been enough for me but I now have an entire sheet of products that make my skin look and feel flawless and I haven't spend hundreds on testing products that I'm not sure will work.  I learned which of my own products work and which ones don't and where to find good deals on quality products.  I've taken away so many good tips.  Julie has reformed me, I will now wash with a real soap-less facial cleanser, wear a physical sunscreen moisturizer, I will forever do my eyes first and will always know how to pick a foundation and concealer that match my skin.  

I hope this was helpful especially for those of you who are thinking about taking a lesson.  I can't sing Julie's praises enough.  It's sooooo worth it.  An enormous Thank You to Julie and Christy!

Trend Watch: Leather Belted Brides!

Someone please get me a paper bag, this trend watch is bound to make me hyperventilate! You might want one too when you catch a glimpse of these brides using leather belts to complete their look! Deep breaths. The gorgeousness is only beginning, so keep that paper bag handy! If I could do my wedding again, leather belts would most definitely be a part of it! Your bridesmaids can re-use them after the wedding, and we all know what a big trend belts are right now! If you see me out and about, I can pretty much guarantee you that I'll be cinched with a belt. Now get ready for some serious eye candy!

Here are a few belts that I've found online that anyone could use to add that extra bit of personality to their dress, give as gifts to your bridesmaids, or just throw on over a sweater for a great every-day look!

I'd also reccommend hitting up the local thrift stores and one of my favorite shops Fringe & Fray downtown to hunt for some unique belts! Belts are so versitile, pop it over a t-shirt or sweater to add definition to your waisteline and turn a ho-hum outfit into a wow-fit. (okay, that was cheesy... sorry). This is my go-to trick for updating any wardrobe or outfit for a minimal investment! My belt obsession is getting almost as bad as my scarf obsession, and that's pretty intense. 

I can't wait to see some real weddings using leather belts!
